Problem

A motorist is travelling at a constant speed of 90 km h−190\,\text{km h}^{-1} when she notices a barricade 100 m100\,\text{m} ahead on the road. She takes 0.6 s0.6\,\text{s} to react before applying the brakes. After the brakes are applied, the motorcycle is brought to rest with a uniform deceleration just in time to stop before hitting the barricade. (i) Calculate the distance covered during the reaction time. (ii) Determine the remaining distance within which the motorcycle must come to rest after the brakes are applied. (iii) Find the minimum magnitude of uniform deceleration required to stop the motorcycle in this remaining distance. (iv) Compute the time interval for which the brakes must act to achieve this deceleration.
