Problem

For a perfectly elastic collision between two identical smooth spheres on a frictionless horizontal surface, one sphere of speed uu strikes the other, which is at rest. (i) Show that v12+v22=u2v_1^{2}+v_2^{2}=u^{2}, where v1v_1 and v2v_2 are the speeds of the two spheres after the collision. (ii) Hence prove that the velocities of the two spheres after the collision are perpendicular to each other.
