Problem

During an expansion of an ideal gas the pressure varies with volume according to the linear relation P=a+bVP=a+bV, where aa and bb are constants. (i) Derive an expression for the work done when the volume changes from V1V_{1} to V2V_{2} under this relation. (ii) For a particular gas sample, a=1.0×105 Paa=1.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa} and b=−2.0×106 Pa m−3b=-2.0\times10^{6}\,\text{Pa}\,\text{m}^{-3}. Calculate the work done as the volume increases from 0.015 m30.015\,\text{m}^{3} to 0.030 m30.030\,\text{m}^{3}. (iii) If 350 J of heat is supplied to the gas during the same process, determine the change in internal energy of the gas.
