Problem

A fixed mass of an ideal gas is initially at pressure 2.0×105 Pa2.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}, volume 4.0 L4.0\,\text{L} and temperature 300 K300\,\text{K}. The gas undergoes the following two successive operations: Stage 1 (Isothermal compression): The gas is compressed at constant temperature until its volume becomes half of the initial volume. Stage 2 (Isobaric heating): The gas is then heated at constant pressure until its volume returns to 4.0 L4.0\,\text{L}. (i) Calculate the pressure of the gas at the end of Stage 1. (ii) Determine the absolute temperature of the gas at the end of Stage 2. (iii) Compute the ratio TfinalTinitial\dfrac{T_{\text{final}}}{T_{\text{initial}}} and interpret its physical meaning in the context of the two-stage process.
