Problem

A toy arrow of mass 0.05 kg0.05\,\text{kg} is shot vertically upward from a bow that uses a spring. The spring has a spring constant of 800 N m−1800\,\text{N}\,\text{m}^{-1}. (a) The spring is initially compressed by 0.10 m0.10\,\text{m} before release. Calculate the elastic potential energy stored in the spring at this stage. (b) Assuming the entire energy stored in the spring is transferred to the arrow, determine the maximum height the arrow should reach above the release point (neglect air resistance). (c) In an actual trial the arrow rises only 3.0 m3.0\,\text{m}. Compute the percentage of energy lost to non-ideal effects such as air drag and internal friction in the bow.
