Problem

A rescue boat can travel at 5 m s−15\,\text{m s}^{-1} in still water. It must cross a 1.2 km1.2\,\text{km} wide river that flows eastward at 2 m s−12\,\text{m s}^{-1}. The boat starts from the south bank directly opposite a jetty on the north bank. (i) At what angle upstream from the northward direction should the boat be steered so that it arrives exactly at the jetty? (ii) Calculate the time taken to reach the north bank when the boat is steered at this angle. (iii) If the boat is instead pointed straight toward the north bank (no adjustment for the current), how far downstream from the jetty will it land?
