Problem

A cylindrical aluminium conductor of length 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} and diameter 3.0 mm3.0\,\text{mm} is connected across a 5.0 V5.0\,\text{V} supply. The free–electron number density in aluminium is 6.0×1028 m−36.0\times10^{28}\,\text{m}^{-3} and the electron mobility is 3.8×10−3 m2 V−1 s−13.8\times10^{-3}\,\text{m}^2\,\text{V}^{-1}\,\text{s}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the current that flows through the conductor. (ii) Determine the drift velocity of electrons in the aluminium under these conditions.
