Problem

(a) Define average velocity for a body moving along a straight line. (b) Using a velocity–time graph, explain why the average velocity of a body undergoing uniform acceleration is equal to the arithmetic mean of its initial and final velocities. (c) A cyclist starts at a velocity of 2 m/s2\,\text{m/s} and, after accelerating uniformly for 5 s5\,\text{s}, reaches a velocity of 6 m/s6\,\text{m/s}. Without using the standard equations of motion, calculate the displacement covered in these 5 s5\,\text{s} by applying the idea explained in part (b).
