Problem

A crate is subjected to three horizontal forces acting along a straight line: 10 N10\,\text{N} to the east, 6 N6\,\text{N} to the west, and 4 N4\,\text{N} to the east. (a) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the net horizontal force acting on the crate. (b) State whether the forces on the crate are balanced or unbalanced. (c) The crate was initially at rest. Predict its subsequent motion after the forces in part (a) start acting. (d) How would your answer to part (c) change if, instead, the crate had been moving eastward with uniform speed before the forces were applied?
