Problem
A potter’s wheel is observed to spin at 120 rpm in the anticlockwise sense. The potter gently presses the rim, producing a constant angular retardation that brings the wheel to rest in 10 s. Immediately afterward, he applies a twist in the clockwise direction that gives the wheel a constant angular acceleration of 2 rad s−2 for the next 5 s.
(i) Treating the anticlockwise sense as positive, calculate the angular retardation produced during the first 10 s.
(ii) Determine the angular velocity (magnitude and sense) of the wheel at the end of the subsequent 5 s acceleration period.
(iii) State whether the wheel has regained its original sense of rotation by the end of the process and justify your answer with suitable calculations.
