A laboratory furnace wall of area 0.50 m20.50\,\text{m}^2 will operate with an inner surface temperature of 900∘C900^{\circ}\text{C} while the surrounding room is at 30∘C30^{\circ}\text{C}. The insulation available has thermal conductivity 1.5 W m−1 K−11.5\,\text{W m}^{-1}\,\text{K}^{-1}. The allowable heat loss is 250 W250\,\text{W}, but the design must include a safety factor such that the calculated heat loss does not exceed 70%70\% of this value. Determine the minimum thickness of insulation required. Give your answer in metres.
