Problem

Two long, parallel conductors AA and BB are separated by 6.0 cm6.0\,\text{cm} and carry currents IA=10 AI_A = 10\,\text{A} and IB=15 AI_B = 15\,\text{A} in the same direction. Point OO is exactly midway between the two conductors. Use μ0=4π×10−7 T m A−1\mu_0 = 4\pi \times 10^{-7}\,\text{T\,m\,A}^{-1}. (i) Draw a labelled diagram showing the directions of currents and the magnetic fields at point OO due to each conductor. (ii) Calculate the magnetic field at OO produced by conductor AA and by conductor BB separately. (iii) Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant magnetic field at OO when the currents are in the same direction. (iv) If the currents were in opposite directions, calculate the new magnitude and state the direction of the resultant magnetic field at OO. Explain the change, if any.
