Problem

Consider a hollow right circular cylinder (a pipe) that is open at both ends. The external radius is RR, the internal radius is rr and the length is hh where R>rR>r. (i) List all the distinct surfaces that form the boundary of the pipe. (ii) Using your list, write an expression in terms of RR, rr and hh for the total surface area of the pipe. (iii) Explain why the areas of the circular faces that form the common boundary between the inner and outer cylinders are not subtracted when determining surface area, even though such subtraction is necessary when finding the volume of material in the pipe.
