Problem

A corroded bolt requires a minimum torque of 60 N⋅m60\,\text{N}\cdot\text{m} to loosen. A technician has a 0.35 m0.35\,\text{m} wrench but, because of surrounding machinery, can apply the pulling force only at an angle of 35∘35^{\circ} relative to the handle. The technician’s maximum sustainable pulling force is 90 N90\,\text{N}. (a) Show quantitatively whether the technician can generate the required torque under these restrictions. (b) If the result from part (a) indicates the torque is insufficient, determine either • the minimum angle (measured relative to the handle) at which the technician would have to pull with the same 90 N90\,\text{N} force, or • the minimum wrench length needed if the 35∘35^{\circ} pulling angle is unavoidable. Choose one of these two options and provide your calculation and final numerical answer. (c) Discuss, in two or three sentences, how safety-factor considerations might influence the technician’s choice between increasing wrench length and changing the pulling angle.
