Problem

A smooth, isolated metallic sphere of mass 50 g50\,\text{g} is suspended by an insulating thread. It is charged by contact with a negatively charged rod so that 5.0×10115.0\times10^{11} electrons are deposited on it. (i) Calculate the charge acquired by the sphere. (ii) The charged sphere is then touched to an identical uncharged sphere and separated. Find the final charge on each sphere and the number of electrons that move during the contact. (iii) The second sphere is now momentarily connected to the Earth (earthed) and then disconnected. Assuming no other interactions, determine the final charge on the first sphere after this sequence of operations.
