Problem

In a series circuit connected to a 200 V, 50 Hz supply, a coil of inductance 0.30 H and negligible resistance is in series with a resistor of resistance 40 Ω and a capacitor of capacitance 80 µF. (i) Calculate the reactance of each reactive component and hence find the impedance of the complete circuit. (ii) Determine the rms current in the circuit. (iii) Compute the phase angle between the supply voltage and the current as well as the power factor. (iv) Hence obtain the average power absorbed by the circuit. (v) Comment, with reasons, on whether the current in this circuit is wattless or power-consuming.
