Problem

A solid rectangular block of iron has length 10 cm10\,\text{cm}, breadth 5 cm5\,\text{cm} and height 2 cm2\,\text{cm}. The density of iron is 7.8 g cm−37.8\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (a) Calculate the volume of the block in cm3\text{cm}^3 and in m3\text{m}^3. (b) Determine the mass of the block. (c) Find its weight in air. (d) State, with reason, whether the block will float or sink when placed in water.
