Problem

Two moles of an ideal gas at 300 K300\,\text{K} undergo a reversible isothermal expansion from an initial volume of 5.0 L5.0\,\text{L} to a final volume of 20.0 L20.0\,\text{L}. Take the universal gas constant R=8.314 J mol−1K−1R = 8.314\,\text{J\,mol}^{-1}\text{K}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the work done by the gas during the expansion. (ii) Determine the magnitude of heat absorbed by the gas in this process. (iii) Find the change in entropy of the gas. (iv) Assuming the surroundings remain at 300 K300\,\text{K}, calculate the entropy change of the surroundings and hence the total entropy change of the universe for this process.
