Problem
(a) Define an action–reaction force pair.
(b) A student tries to walk across a highly polished ice rink while wearing smooth-soled shoes. She slips and is unable to move forward even though she keeps pushing backward with her feet. Explain, with proper reasoning based on Newton’s third law of motion, why her attempt to walk fails on ice but succeeds on an ordinary rough road.
(c) Would wearing spiked shoes help her to walk on ice? Give reasons for your answer.
