Problem

A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed of uu. Neglect air resistance. (i) Replacing the constant acceleration aa in the standard kinematic equations by −g-g, derive an expression for the vertical displacement yy of the ball at any time tt after projection. (ii) Using your result from part (i), show that the maximum height HH reached by the ball is given by H=u22gH = \tfrac{u^{2}}{2g}. (iii) Calculate the maximum height attained when u=30 m s−1u = 30\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, taking g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}.
