Problem

The barrel of a vertical spring‐powered toy gun contains a light spring of constant 250 N m−1250\,\text{N\,m}^{-1}. A steel ball of mass 0.10 kg0.10\,\text{kg} is pushed down to compress the spring by 0.080 m0.080\,\text{m} and then released vertically upwards. Neglect air resistance. (i) Find the speed of the ball as it just leaves the gun barrel (at the natural length of the spring). (ii) Calculate the maximum height (measured from the natural length of the spring) reached by the ball. (iii) If the toy is required to shoot the same ball to a height of 10 m10\,\text{m} above the natural length of the spring, determine the compression that should be given to the spring before release.
