Problem

A river 300 m300\,\text{m} wide flows steadily due east with a speed of 2 m s−12\,\text{m s}^{-1}. A swimmer can swim at 5 m s−15\,\text{m s}^{-1} in still water and starts from the south bank. (i) If the swimmer heads due north, find his velocity relative to the ground, stating magnitude and direction. (ii) Calculate the time taken to reach the opposite bank. (iii) Determine how far downstream from the point directly opposite his starting point he will land.
