Problem

A laboratory syringe contains an ideal gas at atmospheric pressure. The cylindrical barrel is made of metal, so its volume does not change with temperature. Two experiments are conducted, starting from identical initial conditions. • Experiment 1: The plunger is clamped in place so the gas volume remains constant while the syringe is gently warmed over several minutes. • Experiment 2: The plunger is allowed to slide freely, so the gas pressure remains equal to atmospheric pressure while the syringe is warmed by the same amount as in Experiment 1. (1) For Experiment 1, describe qualitatively how the pressure inside the syringe changes during the warming. Explain your reasoning. (2) For Experiment 2, describe qualitatively how the volume of the gas changes during the warming. Explain your reasoning. (3) After both experiments reach thermal equilibrium with the warmer surroundings, compare the final temperatures of the gas in the two syringes. State which is higher, or whether they are equal, and justify your answer with qualitative reasoning.
