Problem

Vector P=a i^+b j^\mathbf{P}=a\,\mathbf{\hat{i}}+b\,\mathbf{\hat{j}} is added to vector Q=Q(cos⁡α i^+sin⁡α j^)\mathbf{Q}=Q\bigl(\cos\alpha\,\mathbf{\hat{i}}+\sin\alpha\,\mathbf{\hat{j}}\bigr). Their resultant R=P+Q\mathbf{R}=\mathbf{P}+\mathbf{Q} has magnitude RR and is directed at 45∘45^{\circ} above the positive xx-axis. Attempt the following parts in order. (i) Express the xx- and yy-components of R\mathbf{R} in terms of the unknowns aa and bb as well as the known quantities Q,αQ,\alpha and RR. (ii) Hence derive general expressions for aa and bb in terms of Q,α,RQ,\alpha,R. (iii) If Q=6 NQ=6\,\text{N}, α=120∘\alpha = 120^{\circ} and R=8 NR=8\,\text{N}, calculate the numerical values of aa and bb.
