Problem
A metal rod is heated at one end while the rod is rigidly clamped so that no visible motion of the material is possible.
(i) Explain clearly why heat cannot be transferred along the rod by convection.
(ii) Describe, on the basis of molecular behaviour, how heat actually reaches the colder end of the rod.
(iii) If the same amount of heat is supplied to an equal mass of water, state and explain the principal mode by which the heat will reach the upper layers of the liquid.
