Benzene, C6H6, is an aromatic compound that can be represented by resonance structures in which alternating single and double bonds are arranged around a six-membered ring.
(a) Draw one complete Lewis resonance contributor for benzene, including all atoms and lone pairs.
(b) Based on the structure drawn in part (a), calculate the total number of σ bonds and the total number of π bonds in the ring.
(c) Benzene is experimentally found to have six identical C–C bond lengths. Using the concept of resonance and the bonding identified in part (b), explain why each C–C bond length in benzene is the same and intermediate between typical single and double bond lengths.
