Problem
A rectangular playground is 90 m wide and 120 m long. The school wishes to lay an underground water pipe along the shortest line joining one corner of the playground to the opposite corner.
(i) Find the exact length of pipe required.
(ii) The pipe is supplied only in whole-number metre lengths. How many metres of pipe must be ordered?
(iii) While measuring the playground, an error of up to ±0.3 m may have occurred in each side measurement. Assuming the maximum possible error in both measurements, determine the greatest possible error in the calculated length of the pipe.
(iv) Comment, with justification, on whether ordering one extra metre of pipe in part (ii) is sufficient to cover the possible measurement error.
