Problem

Node NN of a circuit is connected to four branches whose currents are designated and oriented as follows: • I1I_1 leaves node NN through a resistor. • I2I_2 leaves node NN through a different resistor. • A current source sends a fixed 2 A2\,\text{A} into node NN. • A dependent current source also sends current into node NN; its value is k I1k\,I_1, where kk is a constant to be determined. • An additional current source of 1 A1\,\text{A} draws current out of node NN (current directed away from NN). Assume the stated directions to be positive for each branch current. (i) Write the current–balance equation at node NN and hence obtain an expression for the constant kk in terms of I1I_1 and I2I_2. (ii) If steady–state measurements yield I1=5 AI_1 = 5\,\text{A} and I2=3 AI_2 = 3\,\text{A}, calculate the numerical value of kk.
