Problem
An astronaut aboard a spacecraft is orbiting Earth in a circular path at a constant speed of 7.7km/s. Inside the spacecraft, the astronaut releases a small wrench, which appears to float freely alongside her.
(a) From the perspective of an observer on Earth’s surface, describe the net force acting on the wrench immediately after it is released. Identify the agent responsible for this force.
(b) From the perspective of the astronaut inside the spacecraft, explain why the wrench appears to float, even though a net force is acting on it in the Earth observer’s frame.
(c) Is the wrench in translational equilibrium in the inertial frame of a distant, non-accelerating observer far from Earth? Justify your answer clearly.
(d) Discuss how this scenario exemplifies Newton’s first law and the importance of recognizing the reference frame when classifying a system as being in equilibrium or nonequilibrium.
