Problem
A 0.20 kg hockey puck slides across frictionless ice at 3.0 m s⁻¹ due east. It collides and sticks to a second puck of mass 0.30 kg that is sliding due north at 2.0 m s⁻¹. Treat the ice surface as horizontal and neglect external forces during the very short collision interval.
(a) Calculate the magnitude of the linear momentum vector for each puck before the collision.
(b) Determine the magnitude and the compass direction of the total linear momentum of the two-puck system immediately after they stick together.
(c) Sketch a scale diagram showing how the individual momentum vectors combine to give the resultant you found in part (b). Label all vectors, include a scale, and indicate the angle that specifies direction.
