Problem

A solid copper rod of length 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} and diameter 1.6×10−2 m1.6\times10^{-2}\,\text{m} has one end kept at 150 ∘C150\,^{\circ}\text{C} and the other end at 50 ∘C50\,^{\circ}\text{C}. The thermal conductivity of copper is 400 W m−1 K−1400\,\text{W}\,\text{m}^{-1}\,\text{K}^{-1}. (i) Calculate the steady rate of heat flow through the rod. (ii) The copper rod is replaced by an aluminium rod of the same length and diameter. If the thermal conductivity of aluminium is 210 W m−1 K−1210\,\text{W}\,\text{m}^{-1}\,\text{K}^{-1}, determine the new rate of heat flow. (iii) By what percentage does the heat flow rate change when copper is substituted by aluminium?
