Problem
A research group investigates photon scattering from free electrons using an incident X-ray beam of wavelength 0.0710 nm. For several scattering angles, they measure the wavelength λs of the scattered photons; the results are shown below.
Angle θ (deg) | 0 | 30 | 60 | 90 | 120 | 150
Measured λs (nm) | 0.0710 | 0.0713 | 0.0722 | 0.0734 | 0.0746 | 0.0755
(a) Describe a graphical procedure, using the data provided, that would allow a determination of the Compton wavelength of the electron. Clearly state which quantities would be plotted on each axis and why a straight-line relationship is expected.
(b) Carry out the graphical analysis you described in part (a) to estimate the experimental value of the Compton wavelength. Show all calculations leading to your estimate.
(c) Compare your experimental value with the accepted value of 0.00243 nm. Discuss two plausible sources of experimental uncertainty or systematic error that could account for any discrepancy.
