Problem
Two singly charged ions, Ion A and Ion B, are released simultaneously from rest at the midpoint between two large, horizontal, parallel plates that are separated by a distance d. The upper plate is maintained at a higher electric potential than the lower plate, producing a uniform downward electric field inside the region between the plates. Ion A has twice the mass of Ion B, but both carry the same sign and magnitude of charge.
Answer the following qualitatively. No calculations are required, but your reasoning must cite relevant physical principles and clearly connect them to the stated observations.
(a) Describe which ion reaches the lower plate first and explain why.
(b) Both ions are now given identical initial horizontal velocities directed toward one edge of the plates while still starting at the same midpoint location. Compare the shapes of their trajectories during the passage between the plates and explain the differences.
(c) Predict how the time required for each ion to reach the lower plate would change if the sign of their charges were reversed while all other conditions remain the same. Justify your prediction.
