Problem

A uniform steel beam 4.0 m4.0\,\text{m} long and of mass 20 kg20\,\text{kg} is attached to a wall by a frictionless hinge at its left end. The beam is held in a horizontal position by a light cable connected from the right end of the beam to the wall above, making an angle of 40∘40^{\circ} above the beam. A worker of mass 60 kg60\,\text{kg} stands on the beam 1.5 m1.5\,\text{m} from the right end. The system is at rest. (1) Calculate the magnitude of the tension in the cable. (2) Determine the magnitude and direction (indicate whether it acts toward or away from the wall) of the horizontal component of the hinge force exerted on the beam. (3) Determine the magnitude and direction (upward or downward) of the vertical component of the hinge force. (4) The worker now walks slowly toward the right end of the beam. Predict qualitatively how each component of the hinge force will change (increase, decrease, or remain the same) and justify your predictions.
