Problem

A van of mass 1500 kg1500\,\text{kg} climbs a straight road that is inclined at an angle of 5∘5^{\circ} to the horizontal. It moves up the incline with a steady speed of 15 m s−115\,\text{m s}^{-1}. While ascending, it encounters an air resistance of 250 N250\,\text{N} and a rolling resistance of 300 N300\,\text{N}, both acting opposite to its motion. (i) Draw a free-body diagram showing all the forces acting on the van parallel and perpendicular to the inclined road. (ii) Write the condition for equilibrium of the van along the direction of the incline and obtain an expression for the pulling force developed by the engine. (iii) Calculate the power that the engine must deliver to maintain the given speed. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}.
