Problem

The following data relate the wavelength of maximum emission, λmax\lambda_{\text{max}}, of a hot cavity to its absolute temperature, TT. T (K): 1000 1200 1500 1800 λmax\lambda_{\text{max}} (μ\mum): 2.90 2.42 1.93 1.61 (i) Complete a table of 1T\frac{1}{T} (in K−1\text{K}^{-1}) corresponding to the given temperatures. (ii) Using the data, draw a straight-line graph of λmax\lambda_{\text{max}} on the vertical axis against 1T\frac{1}{T} on the horizontal axis. From its slope, determine the numerical value and appropriate SI unit of the constant appearing in Wien’s displacement law. (iii) A distant star shows a peak emission at 480 nm480\,\text{nm}. Using your value of the constant, estimate the surface temperature of the star.
