Problem

A circular flower bed has a radius of 14 cm. A decorative metal rim is fixed only along an arc of the flower bed, leaving the remaining boundary without the rim. The measured length of the rim (along the arc) is 44 cm. (a) Find the measure of the central angle (in degrees, correct to one decimal place) subtended by the rim at the centre of the flower bed. (b) Calculate the area of the sector enclosed by the two radii and the rim. (c) Find the area of the rest of the flower bed that is not bordered by the metal rim. (d) Show that the sum of the areas obtained in parts (b) and (c) equals the area of the entire circle.
