Problem

A small block is placed on a rough adjustable incline. The angle of the incline is slowly increased from 0∘0^{\circ}. When the angle reaches 30∘30^{\circ}, the block just begins to slide. The angle is then kept fixed at 30∘30^{\circ} and the block is released from rest; it travels 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} down the slope in 1.5 s1.5\,\text{s}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Determine the coefficient of static friction between the block and the incline. (ii) Using the given data, calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the incline. (iii) State whether the value of the kinetic coefficient obtained in part (ii) is expected to depend on the speed of the block, and predict qualitatively what would happen to the time taken to cover the same distance if the incline were lightly lubricated.
