Problem

A uniform thin rod of length 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} and mass 3.0 kg3.0\,\text{kg} is hinged so that it can rotate about an axis perpendicular to the rod and passing through a point on the rod that is 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} from one end. (a) Find the moment of inertia of the rod about an axis through its centre and perpendicular to its length. (b) Hence determine the moment of inertia of the rod about the given hinge axis. (c) If the rod is set into rotation about the hinge axis with an angular speed of 10 rad s−110\,\text{rad}\,\text{s}^{-1}, calculate its rotational kinetic energy.
