Problem

Two identical bar magnets are placed coaxially with their unlike poles facing each other. The north pole of one magnet and the south pole of the other are 1 cm apart; the remaining poles are far away from the region of interest. (i) Sketch the qualitative pattern of magnetic field lines in the region between and outside the two magnets. Mark clearly the direction of the field. (ii) State whether a neutral point exists in the space between the facing poles. Give a reason for your answer based on your sketch. (iii) If the gap between the facing poles is gradually reduced to zero, describe how the field pattern and the field strength in the intervening region will change.
