Problem

Element E is a metalloid located on the boundary between Groups 13 and 14. When combined with hydrogen under various conditions, three compounds—EHEH, EH2EH_{2}, and EH4EH_{4}—are isolated as pure substances. (a) For each compound, identify the predominant bonding type in the E–H bonds and justify your answer based on the periodic position of E relative to hydrogen. (b) Predict which of the three compounds is expected to have the lowest normal boiling point and explain your reasoning in terms of intermolecular forces that stem from the E–H bond character. (c) Suppose EH4EH_{4} is reacted with excess sodium metal to form a solid product containing sodium and the EH3−EH_{3}^{-} anion. Describe the bonding and electrostatic interactions present in this product.
