Problem

You are required to connect a metal-bodied refrigerator to a 230 V230\,\text{V} domestic supply using a three-pin plug fitted with a 5 A5\,\text{A} fuse. (i) Draw a neat, labelled diagram of the interior of the three-pin plug showing the positions of the live, neutral and earth pins and the fuse. (ii) Describe step by step how you would connect a three-core flexible cable to the plug so that the wiring is safe. Mention the colour of insulation that must go to each pin. (iii) After some months the live conductor inside the refrigerator becomes loose and touches the metal body. Trace the sequence of events that will take place in the circuit up to the point where the fault is automatically cleared, clearly stating the role of the earth conductor, the direction of current and the action of the fuse. (iv) Another person replaces the damaged three-core cable with a two-core cable containing only live and neutral conductors. Analyse the risks that now exist if the same fault occurs again.
