Problem

A trolley on a straight track moves as follows: • It travels at a constant speed of 2 m/s2\,\text{m/s} for the first 5 s5\,\text{s}. • Its speed then increases uniformly to 8 m/s8\,\text{m/s} during the next 3 s3\,\text{s}. • Finally, it keeps moving at 8 m/s8\,\text{m/s} for a further 4 s4\,\text{s}. Answer the questions that follow. (i) Draw a velocity–time graph for the 12 s12\,\text{s} motion described. (ii) Calculate the total displacement of the trolley in the 12 s12\,\text{s} interval. (iii) Determine the average velocity of the trolley for the whole journey.
