Problem

A rectangular conducting loop ABCDABCD of width w=0.20 mw = 0.20\,\text{m} and length l=0.50 ml = 0.50\,\text{m} moves to the right with a constant speed v=2.0 m s−1v = 2.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} on a smooth horizontal table. The left half of the table is covered by a uniform vertical magnetic field of magnitude B=0.30 TB = 0.30\,\text{T} directed downward into the table, while the right half has no magnetic field. The total resistance of the loop is R=0.50 ΩR = 0.50\,\Omega. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the induced emf in the loop while it is leaving the field region. (ii) Identify the direction of the induced current in the loop during this interval. (iii) Determine the magnitude of the induced current and hence the electrical power dissipated as heat in the loop. (iv) Compute the magnitude of the external horizontal force that must be applied to keep the loop moving with uniform speed while it is partly in the field.
