Problem

A body of mass mm is taken to a small height hh above the Earth’s surface and then to an equal depth dd below the surface (h,d ≪ Rh, d \,\ll\, R, where RR is the Earth’s radius). (i) Derive an expression for the fractional change in the acceleration due to gravity at height hh in terms of hh and RR. (ii) Using a similar method, derive the fractional change in the acceleration due to gravity at depth dd. (iii) For h=d=500 mh = d = 500\,\text{m} and R=6.4×106 mR = 6.4 \times 10^{6}\,\text{m}, calculate the percentage change in gg in each case, retaining two significant figures. (iv) Comment on which change (at height or at depth) is numerically larger and give a physical reason for the difference.
