Problem

A shopping trolley of mass 20 kg20\,\text{kg} is initially at rest on a horizontal floor. A shopper pushes it forward with a constant force of 40 N40\,\text{N} for 4 s4\,\text{s}. The floor offers a constant frictional force of 5 N5\,\text{N} opposite to the motion. After 4 s4\,\text{s} the shopper removes her hands and the trolley continues to move until it comes to rest under the action of the same frictional force only. Answer the following questions. (i) Find the acceleration of the trolley while it is being pushed. (ii) Calculate the speed of the trolley at the instant the shopper lets go. (iii) Determine the distance moved during the first 4 s4\,\text{s}. (iv) Find the acceleration of the trolley after the push stops. (v) Compute the additional time taken and the extra distance travelled before the trolley comes to rest.
