Problem

An isolated atom has the following bound‐state energies: ground state E0=−5.0 eVE_0=-5.0\,\text{eV} and an excited state E2=−0.5 eVE_2=-0.5\,\text{eV}. A third state at E1=−2.0 eVE_1=-2.0\,\text{eV} lies between them. The atom is initially in state E2E_2 and returns to the ground state by first dropping to E1E_1 and then to E0E_0, emitting a photon at each step. Use h=6.63×10−34 J sh=6.63\times10^{-34}\,\text{J\,s}, c=3.00×108 m/sc=3.00\times10^{8}\,\text{m/s}, and 1 eV=1.60×10−19 J1\,\text{eV}=1.60\times10^{-19}\,\text{J}. (1) Calculate the wavelength of the photon emitted in the E2→E1E_2\to E_1 transition. (2) Calculate the wavelength of the photon emitted in the E1→E0E_1\to E_0 transition.
