Problem

A single-loop circuit contains two ideal batteries and one resistor, all connected in series. Beginning at point P and proceeding clockwise, the elements encountered are: Battery 1 (emf 6.0 V, positive terminal first), a resistor R = 24 Ω, and Battery 2 of unknown emf E, oriented so that its positive terminal is reached last. When the circuit is operating, a clockwise current of magnitude 0.15 A is measured. (a) Determine the value of the unknown emf E. (b) Calculate the electrical energy delivered by Battery 1 to 1.0 C of charge passing through it. (c) Calculate the electrical energy absorbed by Battery 2 from the same 1.0 C of charge. (d) Verify quantitatively that energy is conserved for 1.0 C of charge completing one loop in the specified direction.
