Problem

A series circuit consists of a resistor of resistance 40 Ω, an inductor of inductance 0.20 H and a capacitor of capacitance 100 μF connected to a 220 V (r.m.s), 50 Hz AC source. (i) Write the expressions for inductive reactance, capacitive reactance and impedance of the circuit. (ii) Derive an expression for the power factor of a series RLC circuit in terms of its resistance and impedance. (iii) Calculate the numerical values of XLX_L, XCX_C, ZZ, the power factor and the phase angle for the given circuit. (iv) Determine the r.m.s current flowing and hence the average power consumed by the circuit. (v) Comment briefly on how the value of the power factor influences the real power obtained from the source.
