Problem

The continuum (ionization limit) for a certain atom is defined as 0 eV, and the ground state is at −5.0 eV. An upper excited state decays by emitting two photons: one of 1.3 eV that terminates in the ground state and another of 0.8 eV that terminates in a different bound state. (a) Determine the energy (in eV) of the upper excited state. (b) Determine the energy (in eV) of the second lower bound state.
